You know that you need to protect your skin from the sun, but you might not like the idea of using store-bought sunscreen that’s full of chemicals. If you prefer something with natural ingredients, you can make your own. Sunscreen is surprisingly easy to make, and it’s also effective against those powerful sun’s rays. Protect yourself by whipping up a batch of homemade sunscreen this summer.

Ingredients For Homemade Sunscreen

You need to get some ingredients for homemade sunscreen. This formula requires the following:

  • ½ cup of olive oil
  • ¼ cup of coconut oil
  • ¼ cup of beeswax
  • 2 tablespoons of zinc oxide
  • 1 tablespoon of red raspberry seed oil
  • 1 teaspoon of carrot seed oil
  • 2 tablespoons of shea butter

Making the Sunscreen

Set the zinc oxide off to the side and place all of the other ingredients in a glass jar. After, put approximately 2 inches of water in a saucepan and heat it on medium heat, and place a lid loosely on the jar. Next, put it in the saucepan to heat it up. Shake the jar occasionally while it heats up to mix the ingredients.

When the ingredients melt, put on a mask for protection and add the zinc oxide to the jar. Then, pour the mixture into a storage container. Stir it several times after putting it into the new container. Next, place it in the refrigerator to store it. It will last longer in the refrigerator, but you can also keep it in a cool and dry place if you prefer.

Wearing the Sunscreen

You will apply the sunscreen as normal. It works as a physical barrier to prevent the sun from damaging your skin. This is a departure from how most sunscreens work. Typically, sunscreen penetrates the skin. If you don’t like the idea of chemicals penetrating below the surface of your skin, this is a good option.

While it does an excellent job of protecting dry skin from rays, it is not waterproof. If you get in the water or sweat, you’ll need to reapply it.

How to Make Sunscreen With Fewer Ingredients

You can also make sunscreen using fewer ingredients if you prefer. Begin by choosing a lotion that doesn’t have citrus oils listed as an ingredient. Then, add two tablespoons of non-nano zinc oxide. Mix it up, and it will be ready to use when you go outdoors.

Keep this recipe handy to make sunscreen throughout the summer. It feels good on the skin, and it will help you combat the harsh summer rays. Make sure you put it on every time you go outside to ensure you have the protection you need!
