Female hiker surrounded by beautiful fall colors

The northeastern portion of the United States is known for its stunning fall colors. People flock from all over to get a glimpse of the changing leaves and other vibrant sights. Pittsburgh, PA, is no exception. If you’re a local resident or visiting from elsewhere, mark autumn time on your calendar. You also need to check out some of the top hiking spots where the gorgeous views will take your breath away.

Emerald View Trail

One of the first hikes you’ll want to try this fall in Pittsburgh is the Emerald View Trail. This loop totals just over 2 miles and is moderately difficult. Aside from the views, you’ll love that there isn’t a lot of traffic here. You can also bring your dog, as long as your four-legged friend is on a leash. The trail takes you through a forest, so there are plenty of chances to see the changing, falling leaves.

Hollow Oak Loop

If you are up for a bigger challenge, the Hollow Oak Loop fits the bill. But this hike is well worth the effort. It’s a 3.2-mile loop where you’ll gain more than 400 feet in elevation. Dogs can also come on the trail, but be aware that this hike is heavily trafficked. The scenery is nothing short of awe-inspiring. You’ll see your share of colorful leaves, not to mention a peaceful river and some wildlife. You can access it much of the year, but spring through early fall are the best times.

Schenley Park Double Loop

This trail is a 5-mile hike that takes you through Schenley Park. This park has plenty of trees, so capturing some good fall pictures shouldn’t be difficult. By keeping up a steady pace, you can finish the trail in about 2 ½ hours. But there’s no need to rush when there are so many gorgeous colors to see.

Great Allegheny Passage Trail

Often used as a cycling trail, you can also walk as much of this road as you’d like. In all, it stretches 150 miles but is mostly moderate from start to finish. You’ll walk alongside waterways and among the trees and shrubbery. The sights, smells, and sounds of this trail are lively during the fall.

Nestled in the forest, this trail is moderately difficult and invites you all year long. The trails are well-maintained and lead you to a hill where you can overlook the fall setting.
