Indulge In These Homemade Peppermint Patties

Two chocolate coated peppermint patties with mint leaves

Peppermint is one of those staple Christmastime flavors that always returns with the chilly weather. If you want to make your own winter-fresh treats at home, this recipe by Butter with a side of Bread makes it as easy as can be.

Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own minty treats:

  • ¼ cup butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 or 2 teaspoons peppermint extract or essential oil
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 2 cups dark melting chocolate
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Making Treats

To get started, add the soft butter, sugar, syrup, and mint flavor to a large bowl. Us an electric mixer to combine the ingredients until smoothly integrated, which should take about three minutes. Break the mixture into small sections, and roll each morsel into a ball. Flatten each piece on a parchment paper-lined pan, then freeze them all for up to 15 minutes. Melt down your chocolate, stirring it as needed to ensure a smooth consistency. When the chocolate is fluid, take the patties out of the freezer and use a fork to carefully dip each piece into the chocolate, then return the coated treats to the pan to let the chocolate solidify. As the chocolate shell cools, you can sprinkle the mints with sprinkles or any other garnish that appeals to you.

Tips and Storage

Extracts are highly concentrated, and a little bit of peppermint extract goes a long way. Remember to start with one teaspoon when flavoring your treats, then taste the mix to see if another teaspoon is necessary. If the chocolate you’re using is still too thick to dip with once it’s melted, you can cut the liquid with a little bit of coconut oil. These briskly cool mint treats keep well in the freezer, so feel free to store some away for whenever you need to chill out. If you freeze them in a zip-lock bag, they’ll keep for around four to six weeks. Inside an air-tight container, these peppermint patties should last for up to four or five months.
