Top Pittsburgh Summertime Activities

Summer may be well under way, but there’s still plenty of time to experience some of the best activities Pittsburgh has to offer this season! Whether you’re a visitor, a new resident, or an old-timer, there are sights and sounds to appeal to all ages. And many of these attractions are free! Here are a few of our favorites.

Concert Series

Pittsburgh is fortunate to have a wealth of fantastic parks, and many of them have an action-packed calendar of events. You can catch Summer Fridays at the Frick, for a taste of culture and fun for the whole family. Check out the Stars at Riverview Jazz Series with concerts every Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Mellon Park hosts the Bach, Beethoven, and Brunch Classical Music Series on Sunday mornings from 10:30 to noon. On Sunday nights, come to Hartwood Acres Park at 6:00 p.m. to grab a bite from one of the many food trucks and enjoy a free concert in the amphitheater at 7:00 p.m.

Gateway Clipper Cruise

If you’re a Pittsburgh resident, you’re probably familiar with these iconic blue, red, and gold river boats that dot the city’s waterways. What you might not know is that they aren’t just intended for tourists. Not only do they provide their standard hour-long sightseeing tours, they also offer a variety of evening cruises for visitors and residents alike. Options include a romantic sunset dinner cruises, family-friendly sightseeing cruises, and a variety of specialty-themed trips as well.

Family-friendly Festivals

Pittsburgh also boasts a number of festivals and events featuring music, art, food, and fun. In late July the Deutschtown Music Festival returns for its 10th year, with over 400 bands, 11 outdoor stages, and 20 indoor venues. This event is free and family-friendly. The Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival, which is open six weekends in August and September, is a 16th Century Medieval experience complete with food, artisans, performances, and a lively cast in authentic dress. (Attendees are also encouraged to dress in costume.)
