Get Your Vehicle Ready For Winter With These Tips

Checking Tire Tread Depth with a PennyWith winter getting closer and closer by the day, you’ll want to start getting your vehicle ready soon. With freezing temperatures, wind and rain, and even snow and ice, a lot of damage can be done to your car if not properly taken care of. And while it might seem like prepping your vehicle for the cold is a pain, it doesn’t have to be. That’s why Family Handyman has put together this helpful list of how you can better protect your ride all winter long.

Change Your Wiper Blades

Over time, wiper blades can split and crack. This can not only be unsightly, but also dangerous during a vicious rain or snowstorm. To protect against this, change your wiper blades in the fall, and if you live in a harsher climate, consider buying more durable blades.

Prepare Your Wiper Fluid

Another great way to protect your vehicle during the colder months is to prepare your wiper blades. To do this, make sure your wiper fluid tank is at the fill line. This will help wash away all of the grime that winter brings with it. Be sure to grab some wiper fluid that has anti-freeze built in.

Check Your Tire’s Air Pressure

During times of varying temperatures, your tire’s air pressure can change. This can cause your vehicle to get worse gas mileage, and can even be dangerous if left unattended. Be sure to take a look at your vehicle’s manual to see exactly what the recommended tire pressure is.  If you can, pick up a small, home air compressor.

Check Your Tire’s Tread Depth

Worn down tire treads can cause your vehicle to slip and slide on the roadways during rainy or snowy weather. A classic test to determine tread depth is to insert a penny, Lincoln-head down, into your tire grooves. If you can see all of his head, consider replacing the tires.
